What is SKU?
SKU stands for "Inventory Storage Unit" and is a unique identifier for each of your products that make it easy to track inventory.
Each product you sell should have its own unique identifier (SKU) that helps us distinguish one product from another and compare the characteristics of similar products. For example, it is not enough to have one SKU for a T-shirt because it is actually just the name of that product, but you need to have an SKU for each different variant of that product. In the case of a T-shirt, you will need a unique SKU for each combination of color, size, sleeve length ... From this example, we can conclude that the product is "T-shirt", while SKU is "Blue XL T-shirt".
These different codes tell your staff, customers, suppliers, and systems to talk about the same item.
Each product has at least one SKU. If the product does not have a variant, then it has one KU that belongs to it. An example of such a product is "Cabbage" and this product would contain only one SKU "Cabbage".
SKU is not only a physical product but it can also be assigned to some other things that you offer, such as e.g. warranty.
Your success depends on good product management, and good product management depends on SKUs.
